How to Keep Your Basement Dry
6/21/2021 (Permalink)
Basements here in New England tend to be damp and are a primary location within a home for moisture. Contributors to this are the changing temperatures over the course of the year (condensation), poor drainage around the home, and in many cases basements house water heaters, pipes, water filtration systems etc. that can occasionally fail. Here are a few helpful reminders and tips on how to combat dampness and moisture in your home's basement.
- Regulate your basement's humidity by installing a dehumidifier. We recommend running a dehumidifier during the warm months of the year, roughly from Memorial Day to Columbus Day.
- Maintain and check your submersible pump regularly to be sure it is functioning properly to remove excess water.
- Make sure your homes drainage system is working properly and ensure rain gutters, downspouts and diverters are clear.
- Reseal basement windows if necessary to prevent leaks and moisture intrusion.
- Basement bathrooms should be equipped with exhaust fans to eliminate excess moister following a shower.
- Waterproof paint can be a cautious and effective measure to protect your walls from water damage.
