Unpredictable storm systems and frigid temperatures during winter can pose a risk to your home’s defenses. Ice dams can form, pipes can freeze and burst, and a seemingly minor flaw in your roof can turn into a major headache. In winter, there are several things that can cause a water damage at your home. Experiencing a water loss at your home can be overwhelming but knowing what to do and what not to do after the water damage has been spotted can provide peace of mind and prevent the situation from going from bad to worse.

Do:

Turn off the water supply if possible.

Shutting the water off, if possible, should be the priority as it will minimize the water damage restoration required. If you don’t know where the main water shut off is in your home (it’s typically in the basement and/or along an exterior wall) or how to shut it off, take the time to learn this important information.

Remove wet area rugs and small items.

If it is safe to do so, move items of value up off the wet floor to allow them to start drying. Also, pick up any area rugs and hang them for adequate ventilation. This will allow not only the area rug, but the floor beneath, to begin the drying process.

Don’t:

Vacuum excess water.

It is true that water damage professionals use “vacuums” to quickly collect the water. However, these aren’t ordinary vacuums – they’re specially designed to extract liquids. Using a household vacuum poses a significant risk of electrocution when the water makes contact with the electrical current that powers the machine.

Wait to call professionals.

While shutting off the water main will help mitigate the damage, you can’t fully restore your home alone. Only a professional water damage restoration crew will have the tools and techniques to remove all the moisture and sanitize the space to prevent mold and mildew growth. If drywall or other structural elements are affected, technicians can also conduct the repairs necessary to make your home safe again.
