Holiday Fire Safety

Did you know that, according to the National Fire Protection Association, the top three days for home candle fires are Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and New Year’s Eve?
For many, a holiday favorite is the warmth and glow of festive candles, a crackling fireplace and a brightly lit Christmas tree. It is easy to forget common safety practices when absorbed in holiday chaos and cheer. To reduce the fire risk in your home or business this holiday season, the American Red Cross offers the following safety tips:
- Three is the magic number. Three feet that is. Be sure to space Christmas trees and other holiday decorations at least three feet from heat sources such as ovens, space heaters, fireplaces, woodstoves, radiators, heat vents and candles.
- Before you leave the property or go to bed always check that the tree is unplugged, and all holiday lights are off.
- Don’t use candles to decorate a Christmas tree. Also, be sure to extinguish candles before going to bed or leaving the room.
- Make sure to use a tree stand that is sturdy and won’t tip over. Also, keep an eye on pets and young children around the tree.
- After guests leave, designate one person to check that all candles and smoking materials are extinguished properly.
- Anything that can catch fire easily should be kept away from your stove top, fireplace, etc…
From all of us here at SERVPRO, wishing you and yours a safe and happy holiday season!
