Grilling Safety Tips

Remember these safety tips and happy grilling!

Summer is finally here! Time to fire up the grill and enjoy some burgers and hotdogs in the backyard. Grilling can be fun but there are important safety tips to always keep in mind. Here are some tips from the National Fire Protection Association to keep in mind:

  1. Grill outside, away from any structures. Gas and charcoal grills are designed for outdoor use only. Pay attention to overhanging tree branches when you set up your grill.
  2. Make sure that your grill is stable. Grills should be set up on a flat surface where it won’t tip over or roll away.
  3. Keep your grill clean. Grease and fat can buildup after cooking. Be sure to regularly clean the grill and the tray. Also, give coals time to cool down prior to disposing of them in a metal container.
  4. Be careful around the grill. Never leave a lit grill unattended. Keep pets and children away from the grill. Remember that a grill will remain hot for at least an hour after use and don’t ever try to move a hot or lit grill.
  5. Wear appropriate clothing and be careful while cooking. Loose apron strings and baggy sleeves can catch fire.
  6. Be ready to extinguish the fire if it gets out of hand. Have baking soda on hand to put out grease fires and a fire extinguisher nearby for other fires.
